So here we are again on the threshold of a new year. Where do we go from here? So much has changed in the world, so much has stayed the same. There are the global interests - there are the personal interests and the distance between them is filled with so many sidebars ranging in varied importance to life as we know it. Some of the issues may determine the future of our entire planet some of them only our afternoon commute. Still we follow the linear path of time toward our own mortality looking to leave our mark on the world so we won't be forgotten. What will it be?
In Grand Rapids we remembered Gerald Ford's legacy from the Warren Comission to the Nixon pardon. He has completed his earthly journey leaving those left to rummage through his past to glean what it was that he was about. His family and friends probably have a better idea than the public but still commentators try to piece together a montage of events that would give a insight to the life of a former non-elected president. The legacy seemed to be best recounted in the smiles and handshakes of his children greeting the throng who turned out to file by the flag draped casket of their father which rested in the namesake museum by the river. Whether intentional or not he has left an indelible mark on the world. Certainly the speeches will fade from memories and the bricks and mortar crumble into dust but the laughter and love he invested in those around him will ripple through the universe.
